Guided Fiddle Listening Hour: Bobby Hicks

During this webinar, I’ll guide you through a selection of recordings by one of the finest fiddlers ever to live, Bobby Hicks. Bring your favorite beverage and kick back as we journey through some of Bobby’s most interesting and important recordings and discuss what makes his playing so cool, from phrasing to technique. We’ll also talk about Bobby’s career, his significance in Bluegrass history, and what we can learn from him as fiddlers. If you love buttery Bluegrass double stops, are ready to develop your ear, and want to learn specific things to listen for in recordings, this webinar is for you.

Free for weekly students (no registration required); $9 for other folks. Once you register, you’ll receive an email with details on how to join the webinar.

Bluegrass Foundations Workshop

Do you want more support with soloing over common Bluegrass songs, understanding chord progressions, and participating in Bluegrass jams? You’re in the right place! In this in-person workshop, we will learn a common Bluegrass tune complete with melody, chords, licks you can use in your solo, and concepts that will help you understand the tune on a deeper level. These are skills you can use at jam sessions, in your band, and any time you improvise.

$45 registration fee includes practice tracks, videos, chord charts, and a 90-minute group class with personalized feedback. This class will be a hybrid format: students are welcome to attend online or join in person in Portland, Oregon.

We’ll have chord charts available so that if you don’t know the tune someone else is leading, yu can still follow along on your fiddle or a backing instrument. This is a great opportunity to jam in a no-pressure learning environment. Plus, it’ll motivate you to polish your own tunes so you’re ready to lead.

Colorado Fiddle Championships

Come support this fiddle contest! Plan ahead to join us on January 11 & 12, 2025 at the National Western Complex in Denver, CO. This was the very first fiddle contest I participated in when I was seven years old, and it remains one of my absolute favorites. It’s well-run and is such a great way to connect with fiddle friends and support the fiddling tradition. Plus, there’s nothing like a fiddle contest to improve your playing in a short amount of time. Learn more about the contest at coloradofiddlers.org.
